a simple car repair log

my grandma didn’t have much schooling (maybe up to 5th or 6th grade) so she didn’t consider herself book smart, but she was wise, clever and resourceful. i was reminded of this the other day when i was shutting my garage door. she would write on the wall stuff she would want to remember about her car. the last message still there is about her car battery.  (i was also reminded of how stubborn she was by a hole in another wall from when she hit it with her car –  she was definitely driving beyond her time).

there are a lot of little tricks around that house that i am going to start recording before they get lost in time. i’m sure my little niece who had a close bond with her great grandma will appreciate these posts – i know that she is this blog’s #1 fan.

bonus money saving tip – that green paint on garage wall was left over from the front of the house (now in vinyl siding). the same paint is also found in part of the basement. nothing went to waste.

the easiest christmas tree

this is my favorite purchase from my last trip to IKEA. it’s simply a photo of an evergreen tree printed on fabric. right now i have it hanging (wrinkles and all) in my bedroom. after thanksgiving i plan on moving it into my kitchen / dining room.

i always seem to get a christmas tree a couple of days before christmas (if i even get one at all), so i think this tree is going to be my back up for this year. sure it doesn’t have that fresh tree smell, but it adds a festive touch.

eventually i think i plan on making a winter quilt with the tree. with a little border and a simple backing it will fit perfectly on a bed. there is  some log stack fabric at IKEA (like the real version of my log stack pattern from last years calendar) that i will go back and get to make some coordinating pillows out of.

my favorites from the fall collection & a discount

i  always wished that i was someone who could keep journals, but it’s just something that i was never able to do. i think it’s because the large white pages are a little intimidating. or it could be because i’m not the sentimental type – in fact my sister sometimes calls me a robot.

but the new kraft journaling spots and the “i’m grateful journal” is just the right amount of memory keeping i need. i’m enjoying writing the lists that are prompted on the little notes – especially the “dreaming of …” ones. who doesn’t like to make a list of everything they want to do and have.

the “i’m thankful for …” pocket journal is a nice little keepsake that i keep around and make simple notes in whenever i think of something. i’m thinking of passing one around the thanksgiving table and having everyone write in it for a keepsake.

here’s something to be thankful for – right now you can get 20% off your order from shopletterCdesign.com. simple enter the coupon code “givethanks” when checking out. keep in the loop of new products and promotions by signing up for the newsletter.

weekend preparing & stocking up

this weekend is about getting ready for holiday orders and the holiday show i am doing thanksgiving weekend. i am working on getting my new holiday items online and stocking up on lots of calendars, stickers and other goodies.

the weekend is also about getting ready for hurricane sandy headed our way early next week. who knows how bad it will be, but after last years crazy october winter storm that left us without power for 11 days i thought i would be a little better prepared. i am bringing everything in from outside and stocking up on non-parishable food, batteries, candles and water.
last year i ended up staying in my parents pool house with my sisters, nieces and nephew. the propane stove kept us warm and the generator we had part-time kept the food cold. we played cards, banangrams and cooked meals on the grill in the snow. it was a lot like camping at the beginning, but after about a week we were ready to get back to real life.

five steps to a teeny tiny witch hat

my niece is having a birthday party this weekend with her friends and just like her younger sister she is a party planner. this year she is having an orange & purple halloween themed party. for the craft part of the party they will be decorating mini pumpkins. my sister mentioned she was going to look for some mini hats for the pumpkins – but since my niece was sleeping over i said we could just whip some up. we didn’t have time last weekend, but today i went ahead and made some purple hats.

the hardest part of making these was figuring out how to make a cone. after some experimentation i figured they can be made from a quarter of a circle. so here is how to make a tiny witches hat.

one: cut out a circle 8.5″ in diameter and then cut out 4 quarters
two: add some glue to one of the straight sides of a quarter. hold the corner and roll it into a cone. this takes a bit of practice. i stapled the bottom of the cone to hold it into place while the glue dried.
three: make 2.5″ circles (i used a paper punch). inside that circle i used a flower punch for the stem to go through
four: cut little snips on the bottom of the cone and fold up the tabs
five: glue the cone tabs to the circles

now the girls can concentrate on painting and just top their little pumpkin with a hat.

back home

the woman’s day event was fun and successful. i met a lot of people, made some sales and my mom took home a bunch of samples – making my suitcase just as heavy going home as it was on the trip down.

no matter how much i try, i am not a city person. i think all of the crowds and the hurried pace is kind of stressful. i get the greatness of it – all the things you can do and see, but when i am there, my favorite places to be are my uncle and aunts condo and taking a walk to central park.

today on my drive to my office to unpack everything i saw a couple of girls walking a dog and twin goats (not sure it there is such a thing as twin goats, but they looked a lot alike). not sure why they were walking goats, but i thought that this is more my pace.

in the city

today i hopped on a train and headed for new york city. tomorrow i will be at woman’s day magazine’s first annual make it a woman’s day event. so if you are near grand central terminal stop by and visit.

for the last couple of weeks I have been packaging up lots of products while enjoying my new favorite lunch – just veggies with dip. simple and easy. i’ll have some new products available at the event and next week they will be available online.
